WASHINGTON, DC 26 de junio de 2015.
Russell Moore, presidente de la Comisión de Ética y Libertad Religiosa de la Convención Bautista del Sur, reunió una amplia coalición de líderes evangélicos para oponerse a la decisión del Tribunal Supremo en legalizar el matrimonio entre personas del mismo sexo en un comunicado conjunto.
La declaración recomienda seis puntos que la iglesia debe abordar:
• Respetar y orar por nuestras autoridades gubernamentales, incluso a trabajar a través del proceso democrático para reconstruir una cultura de matrimonio (Rom. 13:1-7);
• enseñar la verdad bíblica sobre el matrimonio de una manera que traiga sanidad a una cultura sexualmente dañada;
• afirmar el mandato bíblico de que todas las personas, incluidas las personas del LGBT, son creados a imagen de Dios y merecen dignidad y respeto;
• amar a nuestro prójimo, independientemente de los desacuerdos que surgen como resultado de creencias contradictorias sobre el matrimonio;
• vivir con respeto y civilmente al lado de aquellos que pueden estar en desacuerdo con nosotros en aras del bien común;
• cultivar una cultura común de libertad religiosa que permita la libertad de vivir y creer de manera diferente.
Los líderes cerraron la carta comprometiéndose a "pararse firmemente, testificando con fidelidad la enseñanza bíblica de que el matrimonio es la piedra angular de la sociedad, diseñado para unir a los hombres, mujeres y niños".
"Nos comprometemos a proclamar y vivir esta verdad ante cualquier costo, con convicciones comunicadas a través de la bondad y el amor".
